09/21 AM LIT: Have you ever had a first impression of someone that later turned out to be wrong? What made you form that first impression, and what eventually changed your mind? Based on what you have read so far, what first impression do you have of Mr. Shiflet? Explain what he has said or done that has shaped your opinion of him.

 When I first met my best friend ( I won’t say names) I thought we had a lot in common, and at first it was like that we were like brothers and always helped each other out. But then I realized that  we were both drifting apart from each other. After I left for a year I almost had forgotten about him, and when I went back to visit him he was way different. That’s when I finally realized that we had both changed and that our friendship was hanging on a thread. Now we don’t even talk anymore and sadly 5 years of friendship were all of the sudden gone. We were just two strangers again.


Reflection: People you meet along life may not always stay there no matter how much time you know them.


Summary: I understood that people might misunderstand your actions and end up turning their backs on you.

AM LIT: Talk about a time when you had to write a poem, whether it was for an assignment, event, or special occasion. What was the writing process like for you, and were you proud of the finished product?

Reading it aloud at the gathering was nerve-wracking, but seeing my friend’s eyes well up (and hearing a few chuckles at the inside jokes) made all the wrestling with words completely worth it. It taught me that poetry isn't about using the biggest or most sophisticated words; it’s just about capturing a genuine human emotion and holding it still for a moment. MULTI LIT: Today, we started our discussion about culture and food. What is one dish from your culture that is a must-have as a representation of your culture? Identify the dish and explain what it is and why it is significant.

For my culture dish I choose  paella , which is this huge rice dish from Valencia, Spain.  It’s basically made with saffron rice and traditionally cooked outside over an open fire in a massive flat pan called a paellera. It’s a perfect symbol for us because it’s historic and also represents how our culture is all about family and sharing. Summary: Paella actually started out as just a cheap, basic lunch for farmers who threw in whatever they had like short-grain rice, chicken, rabbit, and veggies. Everything cooks together in one pan until the rice turns bright yellow from the saffron. Reflection: I chose  paella  because it’s honestly way more than just a random meal, it’s like a whole Sunday event for families kinda like a cook-out here in America. Everyone just hangs out and catches up for hours while it cooks, and then you usually eat it right out of the pan together. It just makes me feel really connected to my roots.
